recommendations for shanghai and hongkong

I am going to Shanghai next week, and Hong Kong the week after, and I am starting to get really excited about it! So now I am looking for recommendations for food and things in those two places. In HK I'm staying on Kowloon (in Kowloon?), and in Shanghai I'm staying in a fancy boutique hotel right next to People's Square.

Have you been to either of these places? Do you have anything to recommend?

Also, has anyone purchased the Happy Cow iPhone app? I am considering it but I have such a mixed relationship with Happy Cow I'm just not sure! Advise me, internets!

NOOOOOO it ate my comment!!!!

1) Yumcha at Kung Tak Lam. Lovely view over the harbour and you'll probably need a few meals to try out everything on the menu. (http://sleepyanimal.wordpress.com/2008/12/16/vegetarian-delight/ and http://sleepyanimal.wordpress.com/2009/03/23/vegie-bliss/)

2) Mango desserts at Hui Lau Shan. Mango mochi. No one does it like they do.

I don't remember anywhere specific, but I do remember eating an amazing eggplant dish in Shanghai. I don't _think_ it was 鱼香茄子 (yúxiāngqiézi) but it may have been. I realise this is pretty vague, but eating lots of eggplant is not likely to set you wrong anyway. :)

I was in HK some 7 years ago, so alot will have changed. But I do recall the restaraunt at the monestary Tian Tan Buddha was very good.

I don't have any recommendations, but I hope you have some for me when you return -- I'll be going to Hong Kong in September!

I love the Veg Out iPhone app by HappyCow. It rocks!

Sorry I can't help you with Hongkok and Shanghai but I'd love to know what your all time favourite vegan restaurants are close to Little Burke Street (or not too far out of the city), as I'm heading to Melbourne tomorrow for a few days and am excited about all the options down there!

Thanks a bunch!!

Hey Mandy, I hope I haven't missed the chance to offer you some recs! Def try Lord of the Fries while you're here, there's one at Melbourne Central. Jump on the tram and head up to Fitzroy and go to Yong's Green Food on Brunswick St (112 tram) or Gasometer on Smith St (86 tram). I really enjoy Nudel Bar (on Bourke St near Parliament) as well but it's not purely veg. Have lots of fun whilst you're in town!

Oh man, I thought Shanghai was vegan hell. Where vegans are sent to die :/

Had one delicious meal at M on the Bund. Expensive, glamorous, amazing... really not authentic Asian food whatsoever, but you know, it wasn't swimming in a pool of grossness, so I was happy there.

Hi Steph,

Thanks for your recommendations! Loved Lord of the Fries, such a novelty. Didn't make it to the other ones, but went to Trippy Tacos on Smith St, Shakahari in Carlton, The organic food and wine deli and The Soup Place in Degraves St, off Flinders St in the city....I think that was it! A few places were closed on Mon and Tues so I'll have to make sure that next time I go later in the week!!

Thanks again!
