lentil as anything, abbotsford convent

Went to brunch with Lisa and Danni at Abbotsford Convent, because Lisa was in town for the Animals Australia Forum (to which I didn't get to go, crryyy).

potato cakes (doo doo dododo)

Danni and Lisa both ordered the potato cakes. I sampled this, they were slightly spiced, with a side of vegetables and a little chutney. They weren't crispy like hash browns, more loosely bound like a patty, but they were an excellent meal.

spicy beans

I ordered the spicy beans, which also came with some vegetables. These were pretty delicious too, but I coveted the potato cakes (this might have to do with my potato obsession).

It's totally not accessible. It's poorly lit, you have to walk through a mini kitchen to get inside, it's cramped and crowded and the tables are close together. If you want to sit outside it's a little better. Lentil as Anything is a pay what you feel venue.

world vegan day

Two Sundays ago, I ventured out on a wet and windy day to Abbotsford for World Vegan Day! It was wet and windy, and to be honest I didn't get much of a chance to do stuff, as I was mostly there to hang out on the FoE stall.

myspace doughnut

I did, of course, find some time to sample some food. From Crumbs I picked up a pizza (AMAZING) and a chocolate doughnut (heavy, with a tart after taste). The doughnut is pictured above - please note my nails, all done up for Halloween.

Before getting stuck at the FoE stall, on a whim I decided to enter the raffle. And then, later in the afternoon, when I discovered I'd won a raffle prize, I headed over...

i won a raffle!

only to find this giant basket waiting for me! So I left pretty soon after that, so I didn't have to carry the basket around! I'm not even sure what I'm going to do with all this stuff, but it's pretty exciting!

Does anyone want some curly hair shampoo?

lentil as anything at the convent

I struggled to find a cafe open on Sunday morning for breakfast, but eventually discovered that Lentil As Anything at the Convent would be doing breakfast, so early Sunday morning SJ and I headed out to Abbotsford.

I'd never been to Lentil at the Convent before, but I've heard a lot about it. Pip bakes on occasion for them, and I was looking forward to seeing what they had to offer for breakfast.

What they had to offer wasn't extensive. It's unclear from the menu what's suitable for vegans, and when I asked I was offered only the one option, the Mushrooms.

mushrooms at lentil at the convent

Don't get me wrong, these mushrooms were amazing, the tomato and spinach and the spices all combined to awesomeness, and I really enjoyed it. But SJ got to order the Sri Lankan Breakfast which looked suspiciously like dosa, so I was a bit disgruntled that the filling was an egg and potato curry. Alas!

No cakes to appeal, I suspect because it was the day after Boxing Day.

world vegan day at abbotsford convent

D and I ventured out for our first World Vegan Day in Melbourne! For the last couple of years I've been pretty jealous of people in both Melbourne and Sydney, having delicious vegan opportunities, whilst Perth had nothing much going on for WVD. So I was really excited to have a chance to go!

There was a medium-sized crowd when we arrived, about eleven. We wandered around a bit, peering at stalls, before deciding to have a pre-lunch pie, whilst the queues were still quite small.

funky pie

D had a spicy thai pie, which was delicious. I had a funky chunky pie, filled with mushroom and potato, which I'm sure was fine except that it was frozen in the middle! I exchanged it for another, which was also cold! So I gave up. This unprepared frozenness meant that the lines for the funky pies were very long later in the day, when their pies were finally warm.

We milled around inside, and met up with some bloggers (Vicki, Tahn, and Kristy + Toby), before going on a hunt for something else to eat.

raw vegan cheesecake

D picked up a raw cheesecake from Naked Treaties (by Jemma from s1 Big Brother). This was on the recommendation of Kristy, and both Kristy and D agreed that it was quite delicious.

zesty lemon gelato

After eating some things noodles and fried things provided by the Supreme Master (there wasn't a lot of choice other than that), I cleansed my palate with some delicious lemon zest gelato (which really had zest in it), and D had the bounty gelato (I thought it was yuck, but D liked it).

I wasn't feeling very well, so we left shortly after this, having spent about two hours wandering around, but not before we bought some goodies.

world vegan day haul

Featured here are three dips by Australian Vegie Gourmet, oven-roasted tomato pesto, lentil spread, and chunky tomatoes + chilli. They all taste so delicious! Also featured here are three chocolates, orange chocolate + cranberries, dark chocolate with white mint choc-chips, and chocolate with raisins. Not pictured, the greatest stickers ever, and my official Greens knickers.

Overall it was a success! I just wish there had been more savoury food.

world vegan day meetingupness in melbournia

So, WVD tomorrow. Vicki made a post to see if there was any interest, but so far we've not decided on a location. I literally know nothing about the convent layout, so I'm declaring that at 1130 I'm going to be loitering around the Radical Grocery stall (wherever that may be). I'll be carrying a backpack that looks like a penguin.

I'm willing to loiter elsewhere if someone can suggest something suitable. You can leave a comment with your email address if you'd like to grab my phone number in order to sms me. :o)
