tiamo, nedlands

I was really excited to hear that Tiamo had added a vegetarian big breakfast to their menu. Tiamo has been the hangout of The Breakfast Club for several years now, being central up until six months ago, and with the return of A to Australia after twelve months adventuring, we thought we'd give it a go.

Tiamo's vegetarian big breakfast is eggs, toast, spinach, mushrooms, tomatoes and hash browns.

There was elastic in my spinach (the spinach, incidentally, tasted terrible), they forgot A's latte (or something, it was a coffee drink of some description), and they refused to swap out the eggs. I understand why restaurants have a no swap out rule when it's busy, but the restaurant was very quiet and the eggs are like the main component, did they think I was swapping it out for fun? The only thing they would do was not to bring the eggs out. D and I then shared a serve of baked beans, which was massive (and delicious). The hash browns were crispy and fantastic. The mushrooms were really tasty.

But I'm sick of having to pay a lot of money and be made to feel like they're doing me a favour, and it's no longer a central location, many members of TBC having moved, so I'll not be back.

ararat kebabs, nedlands

ararat falafel kebab

Yesterday we wandered down to Crawley for the Matilda Bay Craft Fair, which was held on the Oak Lawn at UWA. Having meandered the stalls, we bought some preserves for D’s grandfather and nicked off to Broadway Fair to visit Ararat. When we used to live down the street from UWA, Ararat Kebabs was a favourite, as it is open until late, and does a fantastic falafel. My standard order is falafel kebab with salad (no onion) and sweet chili sauce and hommus, perhaps with some chips on the side. Fantastic!

The bread is also pretty amazing, last time we had a party I rang M just before (M lives next door to Broadway Fair) so he could bring some turkish bread with him. The bread there is soft and when you pull it apart you can see the gluten thinly pulling apart.

malaysian gourmet

I was so excited when Malaysian Gourmet first opened, they made all my favourite comfort foods like laksa, kopitam, and char kuay teow. Then I went veg, and all those wonderful home foods were so close but so far, like taunting me.

I can still get a good kuay teow, though, and a fantastic Singapore maifan, so all is not lost. The beehoon was loose and sweet, and the kuay teow was char just right, just enough sauce and the choy sum just tender.

Price was a bit of a shock, it's been at least six months since I was last there and it's now $8.00 a dish, but it's still so tasty. I really do hope I can find a random Malaysian place when we move, or I'll be venturing back here more often than I might otherwise.
