I went as I was meeting up with a group of friends from Meetup.com and spent more time in the bar (where the service was very well organised) than the food. We had some great steamed buns (after realising we were in the wrong line) but all the vegetarian food had run out (it was about 7pm).

we then went to a favourite vietnamese place in swanston st. Much better!Catehttp://www.greenrenters.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7583373780153105573.post-91581696187386476452013-11-22T09:20:57.388+11:002013-11-22T09:20:57.388+11:00We went later last night after reading your rant a...We went later last night after reading your rant and it definitely reminded me of a random festival thing and not of anything like you describe an actual night market to be - but the one you describe is much more delicious sounding :) It was pretty, but it was a generic white-festival-going-folk focused and they could have set it up like that instead of as generically Asian, and riffing off an idea they didn't make good on. Really interesting rant :)Transcendancinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12560758487703686287noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7583373780153105573.post-36711949411552891852013-11-21T21:51:01.848+11:002013-11-21T21:51:01.848+11:00This gave me a pretty good laugh. Perhaps it wasn't meant to, but it really does seem to sum up what happens when cities try to do authentic food festivals, fairs, etc. I haven't been to the night markets in Perth yet - which started a few years ago - but I suspect they are much the same.Sarahhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11869815667597972814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7583373780153105573.post-18981769036311380162013-11-21T15:33:06.891+11:002013-11-21T15:33:06.891+11:00It seems amazing in a multicultural city such as m...It seems amazing in a multicultural city such as melbourne that they couldn't find someone with more experience of night markets in Asian to organise or at least to advise on the event. I have been planning to go there - if I do I will definitely have different expectations after reading your post - and I am sad to hear that there weren't many noodles.Johanna GGGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08594201473931487490noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7583373780153105573.post-11038526558467363702013-11-21T13:35:07.109+11:002013-11-21T13:35:07.109+11:00I'm so glad you wrote this, I thought about go...I'm so glad you wrote this, I thought about going and then thought perhaps it would end up being exactly as you described! So I decided not to go and to see if the write ups were good. I can safely say I've been rather unimpressed with personal accounts (and heard about a lack of noodles and over inflated prices). I'm sorry it was disappointing, it seems like the perfect chance to have had a terrifically awesome event.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7583373780153105573.post-62101285698092782232013-11-21T12:42:18.430+11:002013-11-21T12:42:18.430+11:00I am still upset by the extreme lack of noodles.
...I am still upset by the extreme lack of noodles.

Obviously, yes I totally concur with everything you've said here. Basically the only two positives to come out of my experience of the market is exposure to a couple of food trucks I wasn't aware of, and the delicious pandan coconut mango crack sundae, which despite ridonkulous queue and leery name was still DELICIOUS CRACK.

But there's no way this was a night market in the proper sense. It was "Asian-themed foods by mid to high range restauranteurs in the park." And honestly what would be wrong with marketing the event as such? People would still go, and not be disappointed as what it is would be on the packaging. But this? This ain't a night market, this ain't proper night market food, and the random mishmash of Asian signifiers all over the event is just so goddamn lazy and offensive I just can't even.
